Graduate Aerospace Labs

Time 2009 Location Caltech, Pasadena, California, U.S.A.

Housed in a historically-protected structure originally designed by Bertram Goodhue in 1921, GALCIT has accomplished revolutionary breakthroughs in aerospace engineering. The renovation of the department’s 33,000 square feet of labs, conference rooms, and common spaces acknowledges these past achievements while also suggesting the multitude of exciting directions for its future.

Special design of the walls and ceilings needed a complicated mechanical air distribution to bring in a high level of indoor air quality. Show-lighting design and lab-based architecture drove new mechanical system to match the new look and non-visible air terminals in some areas. State of the art design of new air distribution and collaboration with the existing systems made this project  one of the most efficient and least noisy buildings that was the winner of AIA Merit Award in 2011.

MEP Project Scope: Interior upgrade of professor and staff offices. Enlarge existing labs. Chilled water system fan coils for the offices, and roof top air handlers were used for labs
